how might we empower young adults from historically excluded communities to build sustainable and holistic financial practices?

CONTEXT

Scope: Design Research, Innovation, Customer Validation, UX prototyping

Partners: Vivian Lee, Vivi Kriesel, Bhumika Ahuja

roles & responsibilities: This work was completed for a course called Innovation Studio, a part of the Design Strategy MBA Program at California College of the Arts. i acted as a project manager, market researcher, lead design researcher (exploratory + concept testing), and content developer.

objective: develop a business plan for a financial empowerment app validated by customer and market research.

Background: Racial wealth disparities persist in the US, with white families having 8 times the wealth of Black families and 5 times that of Latinx families. Black Americans also face disproportionately high mortgage denial rates despite making up only 3% of applicants. Our goal was to help close these gaps by providing historically excluded communities with personalized financial guidance, educational resources, and community support to build financial independence. While financial education cannot solve systemic inequities, providing accessible guidance and community support helps build the confidence, autonomy and sense of empowerment that everyone deserves.
